Synopsis:
When a woman turns into a vampire after a visit to the home of Sir Geoffrey, a mysterious and eligible bachelor, she seeks a cure from a doctor who claims to be a colleague of the man who killed Dracula. Original.
This is a great story. Full of independent-minded women straining against the patriarchal values of regency-era society, and wonderful, intelligent, and somewhat special (ahem) men. The writing is texturally superb, and the characters witty. The ending will definitely surprise you, but if you read it a second time, the clues are there. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good (but not too gory) vampire tale, those who like supernatural romance stories, or people who, like me, find most regencies that romanticize 'the ton' obnoxious (this one is amusingly scathing of that society). All in all, this is a fun book! Also, there is no sex (explicit or otherwise), making this a 'gentle' romance.

Synopsis
This book comes highly recommended by some of the best horror writers in the business, and deservedly so, but it is not for the weak of stomach. It is the story of a lost soul, a boy named Nothing, who was born of a vampire and is searching for his true family. But he dimly understands that joining his vampire brothers will cost him more of his humanity than he wants to give up. A mysterious, caring psychic named Ghost tries to save him from his fate and, because Nothing loves this man, he must choose to preserve his own humanity in order to save Ghost's life. The book is graphic in its presentation of kinky sex mixed with vampirism and murder but nonetheless compelling. From Library Journal: Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Univ. Lib., Davenport, Ia.

Reviews and Commentary
This entertaining first installment in a new series by the author of The Vampire Files offers deft touches of wit, beauty and suspense. Amidst the tumult of pre-Revolutionary War America, 17-year-old country gentleman Jonathan Barrett happily prepares to attend Harvard. However, Jonathan's mother, a loyalist whose devotion to the Crown is exceeded only by her quick temper, decides that Cambridge University would afford her son a more proper education. Jonathan resolves to avail himself of the opportunity to study law and carnal pleasure, too. Upon arrival in England, he makes the acquaintance of Nora Jones, a seductive beauty who seems to hold an uncommon sway over her numerous suitors. Soon, Jonathan becomes Nora's favorite, and before long, he is made aware of the bloody source of her power through their frequent trysts, which often resemble a vampiric communion. Later, Jonathan is called home to the troubled colonies, where he is felled by a fatal musket shot, only to rise as one of the undead. Learning to cope with his new existence, he becomes enmeshed in the rebellion while still pining for Nora. From Publisher's Weekly: November.

Synopsis: On the outskirts of Sunnydale, recent rains have uncovered the remains of a five hundred-year-old Spanish expedition. But one of the artifacts, a smoky mirror with an ornately carved obsidian frame, goes missing, along with the history teacher who found it. And when Buffy narrowly escapes the attack of a black jaguar while on patrol, Giles puts the gang into research mode.
An ancient volume identifies the missing mirror as a magical object formed by the Aztec god of darkness. A mortal who looks into the mirror will see his or her fate -- and can be manipulated by the evil god, who is scheming to regain his power. Taking their destinies into their own hands, the Slayer and her friends rush into a ferocious battle between light and darkness in the shadows of a massive Aztec temple, a battle against perpetual night -- and the evil that thrives in the dark hours.

Synopsis: When attractive, youthful Crystal Gregory takes a teaching position at Sunnydale High, she also takes what seems to be an instant dislike to Buffy Summers. Buffy's Slayer sense doesn't detect anything unusual about the teacher. But when you're living on a Hellmouth, nothing is what it seems.
Crystal isn't above playing favorites, and her pets -- including Willow, Michael, and Anya -- are loyal to her in the extreme. This wouldn't bother Buffy...but for the fact that she has found a fresh burn mark on two of the students' necks. Giles immediately recognizes the symbol as the mark of a powerful witch whose existence predates the Salem Witch Trials.
The primal witch will continue to wreak havoc until she successfully gathers a coven of thirteen people who have magickal ability. Once the group is created, she will perform a moonlit ritual to endow herself with infinite power, at which point all members of her clan -- indeed, all human beings -- will be subject to her will. Buffy's going to need her Wicca girl, Willow, to save the world this time -- but can Willow be persuaded by reason before it's too late?

Somehow, the hell-hole must be found and corked at its source. For Buffy, Angel, and the rest of her gang, that means a road trip to Boston where an ailing Gatekeeper resides over a supernatural mansion that has been, until recently, holding the world's worst monsters at bay. Once there, Buffy discovers the catastrophic truth: the magical structure houses thousands of rooms, all of which are doorways to limbo's "ghost roads," and all of which may bring her face-to-face with the most nefarious forces in hell and on earth -- forces bent on horrific plans far worse than the Slayer ever imagined.

And Xander lies mortally wounded from a failed attempt to free Joyce Summers from the clutches of the zealots who hold her hostage.
With the Gatekeeper rapidly weakening, Buffy sends Willow and Cordelia to escort Xander along the Ghost Roads to the Gatehouse, which may hold his only hope of survival. Armed with a crucifix, a wooden stake, a bottle of holy water, and a string of garlic, the vampire hunter ventures into the world of the undead to end the existence of those who have already died. This collection of 14 stories shifts the traditional focus of the genre from creatures of the night to the figures who stalk them. Introduced by the archetypal vampire hunter, Dracula's Professor Van Helsing, here are tales from such acclaimed authors as Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Anne Rice, Robert Bloch, and Peter Tremayne--whose eerie tale transplants the character of Van Helsing to modern-day Ireland.

"Gypsies, in my experience, are heavily into vengeance. They cursed me. Gave me back my soul. I had to live with everything I'd done and I had to live forever. It took another woman to show me that my endless life was worth living."
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was Angel's first true love, but the relationship was doomed from the start -- a moment of true happiness would cause Angel to lose his soul forever. So he left -- Sunnydale, Buffy, and everything else meaningful to him.
"Alive for 244 years, I thought I'd seen everything. Then I came to L.A."
City of Angels. Run by powerful forces, agents of pure evil. It's a city hard on its human population. If Angel wants to save himself, he's going to have to save them...somehow. With the help of two unlikely allies -- a half-demon and a ex -- May Queen -- he's going to set up shop....
And keep watch over his city.
The Vampyre (England)/Lord of the Dead
Tom Holland
Our Price: $5.59
Format: Mass Market Paperback - 368 pages Reprint
ISBN: 0671534262
Publisher: Pocket Books
Pub. Date: September 1997
Synopsis: The modern figure of the vampire--aristocratically domineering, supersensitive, accursed, fatally attractive, simultaneously loving and hating life--is based so much on the Romantic literary figure of the damned hero that is called, after its most famous popularizer, Byronic, that this contemporary gothic shocker in which Byron himself is a vampire had to be written sooner or later. Holland has very little to do creatively; he just projects the incidents, attitudes, and methods of vampire yarns, from Dracula to Interview with the Vampire, upon the tenor and themes of Byron's writings (which are liberally excerpted for epigraphs to this book's chapters), and--voila!--he has a thoroughly marketable piece of pop lit that has already fared so well in Britain that Pocket Books is giving it a big-splash launching in America. It may well duplicate its British success here, for it has plenty of the elements--mucking about in the mountainous, gloomy Balkans; S&M-tinged seductions both hetero-and homosexual; shambling, rotting zombies doing vampiric masters' biddings; blood-and-gore^-laden violence; world-weary posturing by the bloodsucking heroes; genuine historical characters in its cast--common in the current spate of vampire romances. But Holland's style is more like Poe's as rewritten by some hack historical novelist than Byron's. Those who crave real literary distinction from the vampire subgenre should be directed to Perucho's Natural History (U.S. ed., 1989) on the high end of the cultural brow, to King's Salem's Lot on the low.
