"The power of the Vampire is that people do not believe he exists."

The stimulation of a sensation of fear, the stirring up of primative superstitions which lie dormant within all of us, the simplification of concepts of good and evil, suppressed facets of the sexual drive, and the enjoyment of other people's misery. Some people risk their lives to feel fear, but most welcome the sensation if it can be engendered without hazard.

In the movies we have suspense and a build up of terror which creates within us the bodily changes associated with fear. This includes an increased heart rate, a surge of blood to our muscles -- and a tingling sensation of the skin caused by muscles at the base of hair trying to make our hair stand on end. ~Tony Whitehead

The key lies in our facination with the supernatural: 'the supernatural' being any abnormal event or being whose existence or occurence cannot be accounted for by the rational mind or by the laws of nature. Belief in, and fear of, the supernatural, have prevailed since the advent of man. The primative mind put down unusual events to the work of 'good' or 'evil' supernatural beings, the allocation depending on their positive or negative consequences. ~Haworth-Maden

In a cultural sense, the 20th century has been the great age of debunking, of secularisation and de-mythologisation. It is not just that we believe less in gods and superstition: it is impossible now for racial mythologies about Jews, Arayans, and blacks to get a respectable hearing; and in large areas of social and private life the old taboos have fallen like sandcastles before the tide of rationalism. In a sense, we are all agnostics now.

There is one great exception to this: the vampire myth. To be sure, the myth is hardly a modern creation. But the audience and resonance this myth has achieved in the 20th century is quite unparalleled. ~R.W. Johnson

In the mirror the vampire reflects nothing, yet inreality it reflects everything. Sometimes the creature spreads its cape in a reflexive gesture, assuming a stance that is a dark travesty of crusifixion, for the vampire is both savior and destroyer. ~David J. Skal

And still, there is no one who truly believes. In our world, the darkness doesn't end with the dawn or at the end of a sharpened stake. The battle between good and evil is never as clear cut. Movies reflect something hidden deep within ourselves, and THAT is what frightens us most. Did you want to be the creature up on that screen, or are you already?
